Fusing community service and public diplomacy outreach to help address Indonesia’s acute blood shortage, for the last two years the U.S. Embassy has cooperated with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) and the local NGO Blood4Life to organize a nationwide blood drive throughout Indonesia, aptly titled Blood4Nation. More than a blood drive, this initiative engaged civil society and promoted voluteerism throughout Indonesia, including some of the most remote regions. In 2012 this event was held just in Jakarta at the @america cultural center and in 2013 at five American Corners throughout Indonesia.  This year’s campaign took place on May 6-7 concurrently in Jakarta and American Corners on university campuses in Makassar, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Ambon, and Padang. In the spirit of friendly competition, a contest was held to see which American Corner could help collect the largest amount of blood over the two day campaign.  Stand-up comedians and live bands performed at @america on both days to help sustain interest and attract potential donors.  During the closing ceremony on May 7 at @america, Ambassador Blake awarded the “Ambassador’s Cup” via livestream to the American Corner at Universitas Andalas in Padang, which collected an astounding 293 units of blood over two days.  Nationwide, Blood4Nation 2014 resulted in the collection of 1045 bags of blood for the Indonesian Red Cross.
