Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program

The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program 2024-2025 is now open for applications!


YES is a merit-based scholarship for high school students aged 15-17 to spend one academic year in the United States living with an American host family, attending high school, acquiring leadership skills, and helping educate Americans about their home country and culture.

The YES scholarship was created by United States Senators Kennedy and Lugar in the months following September 11, 2001 to bring together young people from countries with significant Muslim populations, including Indonesia, to the United States and to fund U.S. high school students on exchanges living and studying in Muslim-majority countries as well. Almost 2,000 young Indonesians have participated in the program. Yayasan Bina Antar Budaya together with the US Embassy in Jakarta are managing the program in Indonesia

The Youth Exchange Program (YES), the one-year exchange Program for high school students in Indonesia, is open for recruitment from August 7 to August 23, 2023.

 Basic requirements

  1. High School student in Indonesia, 10th-11th grade (SMA/ SMK/ MA/ equally)
  2. Age:  15 – 16 years old (born between January 15, 2007 – August 1, 2008)
  3. Indonesian Citizens (not a US passport holder, was not born in the US, one parent is not American citizen)
  4. Approval and consent from parents and school
  5. Does not have family members who work as a staff for The US Embassy or Bina Antarbudaya Organization
  6. Does not have any family members who previously were on the YES Program (parents, siblings)
  7. Physically and mentally fit for the program (YES program encourages students with disability to apply)
  8. Have academic or non-academic achievements, that can be proven with certificate or Letter of Statement:
    • Academic or non-academic achievements and accomplishments at least in city/township scale, or
    • OSIS and/or MPK main board (Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer)

Academic requirements

  1. First grade and second grade in High School (SMA/ SMK/ MA)
  2. Minimum average grade in academic report: 80 for all subjects
