As of April 22, 2020, the Indonesian Ministry of Health has confirmed 7,135 cases of COVID-19 in the country.

Under the Global Level 4 Health Advisory, we strongly advise U.S. citizens in Indonesia to arrange for immediate return to the United States while there is still an opportunity.  

International commercial flight options remain available in Indonesia, albeit at significantly reduced levels.  U.S. citizens seeking to depart Indonesia should make their own travel arrangements as soon as practicable unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an extended period.  The U.S. government does not anticipate arranging repatriation flights from Indonesia at this time.

The following airlines currently have flights within the next few weeks from Jakarta to the United States: ANA, Garuda Indonesia, Japan Airlines, and Qatar Airways. Our most current information indicates that, among these airlines, there are still 21 flights per week by which U.S. citizens can return from Indonesia to the United States:

  • 17 from Jakarta (7 via Tokyo, 4 via Doha, 5 via Seoul, 1 via Amsterdam)
  • 4 from Bali (1 via Doha, 3 via Seoul)

Please reach out to the airlines directly to book flights.  All airlines are operating on a reduced flight schedule.  Flight routes are subject to cancellation without notice, and many flights are heavily booked.  Many travelers worldwide have reported unexpected flight cancellations and limited flight availability and seats.  If your travel has been disrupted, please contact your airline.

There are currently no government restrictions or requirements for U.S. citizens departing Indonesia or entering the United States.  However, travelers should be prepared for domestic travel restrictions to be put into effect with little or no advance notice that may make travel to airports in Indonesia difficult.

Hub countries with connections to the United States are also imposing increasingly strict requirements. As of April 3, Japan no longer allows arriving passengers from the United States or Indonesia to enter the country.  Passengers may transit Japan as long as they do not have to process through Immigration.  U.S. citizens should consider booking flights to major points of entry into the United States and then arrange for further domestic travel upon arrival.  For verified information about the COVID-19 situation in other countries, please visit: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/COVID-19-Country-Specific-Information.html

The government of Indonesia has implemented enhanced screening and quarantine measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19.  As of March 31, the government of Indonesia has suspended visa-free and visa-on-arrival entry for foreign travelers from entering or transiting through Indonesia (exemptions are in place for those holding residence permits).  Visit the website of Indonesian Immigration for additional information on these new measures.

On March 25, the U.S. Department of State ordered the departure of Embassy employees’ family members under the age of 21 from Embassy Jakarta, the U.S. Mission to ASEAN, Consulate General Surabaya and Consulate Medan due to evidence of COVID-19 in Indonesia, limited Indonesian medical capacity, and decreased availability of flights out of Indonesia.  U.S. Embassy Jakarta, U.S. Consulate General Surabaya, Consular Agency in Bali, and Consulate Medan remain open for Mission-critical functions only.  Services for U.S. citizens remain available.

We strongly encourage U.S. citizens, whenever they travel abroad, to enroll their travel plans on www.travel.state.gov using the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and to read the country information found on the site.

The Indonesian Ministry of Health has set up an information hotline regarding the potential for COVID-19 in Indonesia.  Details about the information hotline are available on its website and by calling +62-21-5210411 or +62-82-12123119.

Actions to Take:

  • Consult the CDC website for the most up-to-date information.
  • For the most recent information on what you can do to reduce your risk of contracting COVID-19 please see the CDC’s latest recommendations.
  • Visit the COVID-19 crisis page on travel.state.gov for the latest information.
  • Check with your airlines or cruise lines regarding any updated information about your travel plans and/or restrictions.
  • Visit our Embassy webpage for information on conditions in Indonesia.
  • Visit the Department of Homeland Security’s website on the latest travel restrictions to the United States.
  • Seek medical care right away if you believe you may have COVID-19 (or similar symptoms) or were exposed to someone who may have COVID-19 in the last six weeks.
