On the evening of March 9, the Embassy organized the first ever kaki lima (food stand) night at the Ambassador’s residence, bringing together over 200 Americans and Indonesians to enjoy an evening of American jazz and perennial street food favorites from both countries. Nine of the best of Jakarta’s ambulatory food vendors – including satay (grilled meat), nasi goreng (fried rice), siomay (steamed dumplings), sup buntut (beef soup), and martabak (sweet cakes) – gathered at the Ambassador’s residence, while the Anthony Stanco Ensemble, in town for the Java Jazz festival, provided entertainment. To further emphasize the cultural fusion aspect of the evening, Loco Mama’s Food Truck (owned/operated by Indonesian entrepreneurs) was on hand serving up delicious crispy tacos. Highlighting shared appreciation of Indonesian and American street food, Kaki Lima Night showcased the diverse culinary traditions and entrepreneurial spirit that both countries share. TV crews from national stations, national radio, online outlets, and major print dailies all showed up to join in the fun, and guests were encouraged to vote for their favorite vendor by taking a photo and posting on Twitter and/or Instagram using the hashtag #Kaki5Night.
