On the evening of January 16 before an audience of nearly 200, American university student and founder of the global #LetNoorShine youth movement Noor Tagouri shared her inspiring message of perseverance in pursuit of one’s dreams. Noting that January 16 was also U.S. Religious Freedom day, in her opening remarks Charge d’Affaires Kristen Bauer emphasized the shared U.S. and Indonesian commitment to “unity through diversity.” Ms. Tagouri delivered remarks on growing up as a Muslim American in a multicultural society and on her continuing efforts to become the first American news anchor who wears hijab. Afterwards, the audience, a diverse mixture of Indonesian youth from Islamic university student organizations and from pesantren outside of Jakarta, spent over an hour peppering Ms. Tagouri with enthusiastic questions.
