The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta informs U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Indonesia that the Indonesian national legislative elections will take place on Wednesday, April 9, 2014. The campaign period for these elections will start on March 17, 2014.
While the Embassy currently has no information indicating there will be a deterioration of the security situation during the campaign period or on election day, we urge all U.S. citizens to increase their security awareness during this time. As always, all U.S. citizens are advised to avoid demonstrations and spontaneous gatherings, as even gatherings intended to be peaceful have the potential to turn violent with little or no warning. Additionally, heavy traffic delays and congestion are expected during the campaign period and on the day of the elections as voters travel to polling stations.
We will provide updates as the situation warrants on the Embassy website at http://jakarta.usembassy.gov/.
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Indonesia enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at www.Travel.State.Gov. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
Regularly monitor the State Department’s website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution. Read the Country Specific Information for Indonesia. For additional information, refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” on the State Department’s website.
