Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstration in Central Surabaya

The U.S. Consulate has received reports that approximately 10,000 Persebaya Soccer Club members are scheduled to hold a demonstration in Central Surabaya from around 09:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m. on August 28 to August 30.  The demonstration is expected to originate at Taman Apsari and continue in the vicinity.

The U.S. Consulate would like to remind all U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Indonesia enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency.  If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
