Due to on-going tensions in the Middle East, demonstrations are expected to take place in and around major cities, especially near government buildings and common gathering places such as the Hotel Indonesia circle in Jakarta. As with any demonstration, there is a potential for violence so we encourage people to avoid this area. We remind U.S. citizens to remain aware of your surroundings at all times, as even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
U.S. citizens living and traveling in Indonesia are urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and update their contact information with the U.S. Embassy Jakarta, U.S. Consulate General Surabaya, U.S. Consulate Medan or U.S. Consular Agency Bali. Enrolling facilitates the U.S. Mission’s contact with U.S. citizens in emergencies, and may be done online and in advance of travel.
