Possible Demonstrations at U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya

Reports indicate that up to 500 participants may demonstrate at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and up to 3,000 participants may demonstrate at the U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya at about 1:00 p.m. (after mid-day prayers) on Friday, December 8, to protest U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.  The U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya has temporarily suspended routine public services for Friday, December 8.  The Embassy reminds U.S. citizens of the need for caution and awareness of personal security.

Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news for updates.  Maintain a high-level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security, and follow instructions of local authorities.  Avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations, since even those intended to be peaceful can become violent.
