Social Security

Effective October 1, 2017, the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and the U.S. Consulate General Surabaya can no longer provides support services for the Social Security Administration.

If you reside in Indonesia and have questions regarding services provided by the Social Security Administration (SSA), you must contact the SSA Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) located in the Philippines.  For more information on their services and how to contact them, please visit their webpage at https://ph.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/social-security/ .

If you are already receiving SSA benefits payments, there will be no change in the method of distribution of those payments.

  • I have never applied for a Social Security Number (SSN) and I want to renew my passport. What should I do?
    Please contact SSA Office in Manila to obtain a confirmation by email that you do not have an SSN assigned.  Once you have received the email confirmation from SSA Office, please print out the email (include your email to SSA Manila) and submit it with your passport application.
    You can only submit your application for passport renewal after having received the email confirmation from SSA Manila.
  • I want to renew my passport and I know I have an SSN but I don’t remember it. What should I do?
    Please contact SSA Office in Manila to inquire about your SSN and SSA Manila will email your SSN to our office.  As soon as we receive your SSN from SSA Manila, we will send you an email notification to pick up your SSN at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta or U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya.
    You can only submit your application for passport renewal after having received your SSN.
  • How do I pick up my SSN?
    You will receive an email notification from the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta or the U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya to pick up your SSN.
    After you receive the notification from us, you have two options:
    1) Pick up your SSN in person at an agreed upon date and time; or
    2) Pick up your SSN on the same day when you come in to submit your application for passport renewal (pre-scheduled appointment is required).
